My co-founder and I love languages, and have found that just taking the step to understand a few words in a different language can break down barriers.
Language is the window into a person’s culture. Having an “exchange” allows for mutual sharing of partners’ languages and increase in language and cultural knowledge. It is mutually beneficial and increase the sense of empowerment of the individual who shares.
We hope that the language exchange sessions will be incubators that lead to deeper and more meaningful conversations, friendships and exchange of language and culture between participants outside the session.
Lingua Singapura is a community of people who are passionate about sharing their language and culture, whilst learning about other languages and cultures. There is so much diversity in Singapore, but language and cultural barriers impede integration. Lingua Singapura organizes pop-up language exchange events at various locations to facilitate sharing in a fun and non-threatening setting.
To increase awareness on the diverse ethnic and cultural groups in Singapore.
To achieve greater integration of the various ethnic and cultural groups in Singapore through mutual sharing of language and culture.
To empower different cultural groups to share their language and culture.
Using games, song and dance to facilitate language learning, we hope to build up a culture of empathy, interest in learning about different people and a more open and vibrant Singapura. Languages that have been shared at our events include: Bahasa Bawean, Bahasa Indonesia, Bengali, Chinese, English, French, Hakka, Hindi, Italian, Japanese, Khmer, Malay, Malayalam, Papuan, Sign Language, Spanish, Tamil, Telugu.
